Notes for Richard Dean
By sheer luck, or something else equally amazing, I found information about Elizabeth's father Richard Dean!!

Richard Dean (Father of Elizabeth F. Dean Sturch)

Richard Dean was born 1 April 1759, Dobbs County, north Carolina. (Dobbs County changed its name and today is known as Lenoir County, North Carolina). Richard Dean was living in Dobbs County, NC when he enlisted in the service of the Revolutionary War the last of June 1775 for a tour of six (6) months and joined a regiment commanded by Col. Caswell. The regiment marched towards Wilmington, NC, but before they got there, encountered a considerable number of Tories and battle was made. (This was the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge, 27 February 1776 under the command of Colonel Richard Caswell.) This was the first battle of the Revolutionary War in North Carolina, and the Tories were defeated. Some time there after Richard Dean was discharged, since his six months tour of duty ended.

We don't know where or what Richard Dean was living or doing after his discharge, but about the 14th of June 1778, he was living in the Darlington District (Darlington County, South Carolina) where he enlisted again in the Army of the United States in the 5th Regiment of the SC/NC Continental Line, commanded by Colonel Isaac ? Huger (later promoted to General) (Richard Dean was 19 years old then).

He served a three year term, until 1780, then about the 1st of June 1781 (Richard was 22 years old) he went into Johnson County, North Carolina where he joined a Horse Company, commanded by Captain John Bryant, as rangers through the counties of Sampson, Cumberland (?) and Johnson, in the state of North Carolina. He remained with this company until the close of the war. 1783 - Richard was 24 years old. He was in the battle of Savannah, Georgia and siege at Charleston, South Carolina

Richard Dean and his wife Sally were living in Madison County, Alabama 8 November 1832 when he made application for a "Soldier's Pension for Service in the Revolutionary War". He was granted this pension.

In the 1840 Census, Madison County, Alabama, Richard Dean is listed (between 80 to 90 years old). He was 81 years old; then wife, Sally, was listed between 60 to 70 years old; and living with them was a female between 10 to 15 years old. At the present time, nothing is known about the young female.

Richard Dean died 31 July 1842. Sally Dean and Richard had gone to Franklin County, Alabama sometime after 1840, and resided there. 23 May 1843, Sally Dean signed her Power of Attorney to Daniel B. Turner (to collect for her widow's pension) in Huntsville, an attorney for paying pensions in Huntsville, Alabama, and her signature was witnessed by Richard Sturch.

Richard Dean was 224 years old at the close of the Revolutionary War. When and where he met Sally is unknown at this time, but when Elizabeth F. Dean was born, he was 50 years old, and evidently they were living in York District, South Carolina.

Sturch family tradition says that Elizabeth F. Dean married Richard Sturch 31 August 1826. If this is fact, then she was 17 years old when she married. I wrote to Newton County, Georgia, but they could find NO record of their marriage.

Places (states) that are given by Richard Dean, stating where he lived after the Revolutionary War, are same states (and counties) that Richard Sturch and wife Elizabeth F. Deans children were born. So these families traveled together, at least until the deaths of Elizabeth F. Deans parents, Richard and Sally Dean.

So, sometime between March 1850 and March 1854, Richard Sturch and wife Elizabeth F. Dean moved to Independence County, Arkansas. Before their move to Arkansas, their place of residence was Franklin County, Alabama, and I think that Elizabeth's mother, Sally Dean died their, December 1857.
